I'm loving the gold. I really am!

Years ago I made a little silk banner from deep red silk and a gold Crowned R on it and this just matches so well! There's still a lot to do- the background roses and vines and I feel like though I like the darker pink in the low-lights, I want a little more contrast and will repaint with a slightly browner tone.

I feel this will also be a re-do on the Amore shield with the blue and gold to make the low-lights stand out just that bit more as well. Meanwhile, I'm very happy with the progress so far on this one.

The Squirrel Shield, meanwhile, continues to be not-quite-red-squirrely enough and needs further painting.

Here I have the crowned R transferred onto the shield and outlined in gold ready for the shading and further gold filling in.

Exciting!

The stencil is cut and ready to transfer.

Efforts to find time to actually transfer it have been hampered by a house reshuffle to make the house sitter-friendly while Cabinet of Medieval Curiosity and I jaunt off to Kryal Castle for the Victorian Medieval Festival, which is looming quite quickly.

I'm still waiting for the lavarbo stand bowl to arrive, but the tub is completed and is cluttering up the lounge until I can get it out the front door. Pre-packing needs to be done well ahead. The Cantiga chest needs to have it's bands attached, but the nails which arrived for it are not quite long enough. Much to do. The clock is ticking!

Here's a progress pic on the shield.

I've photocopied the logo a little larger and now it fit's perfectly and matches the size of the A Shield. I have the roses from the Manesse Codex ready to trace on too, so this might be a bit of a project for through the week while I think a bit more about the Squirrel shield and the brown on the squirrel.

I'm loving the colour of my new parade shield with my personal Rosalie's Medieval Woman Crowned R. The red is a sort of iron red and the gold trim really pops.

Unfortunately, the R stencil I had ready was a little too small, so I need to enlarge it a little before I can trace it on. I'll be adding roses of another shade or red across the background similar to the Blue shield with the Crowned A that I finished in June this year.

I'm loving it so far!

The third of the shields has arrived and I've started the base coat and the gold trim.

This one will be my personal one, for tent display and general looking special. Blood red and gold.

Finally I got around to making a start on the actual squirrel. I'm having a heck of a time getting the blending of the paint right, but I found myself at a point where I should stop and breathe before a spoiled it altogether. Hopefully, more time to spend on the weekend on this and it will get to a place where I am happy with it.

So far, I'm having a lot of feelings.

A little progress on the Ex Libris Living History Parade shield! So far, I've done three coats of gold since I'm not doing actual gilding, and agonised about whether to do a border or not.

I decided to go with a black border and I'm glad I did. I feel it does make it stand out a little better. The writing under the squirrel's feet will be white with a thin black border, so I think that will work well too.

Fingers crossed!

I've made a start on the parade shield for Ex Libris Living History group, and I'm hopeful it will work well. The photocopier enlarged the image mostly well, and it transferred across not too badly. I'm in two minds about a few things, but I have settled on a gold background like we see in so many manuscripts. It's the same as in the original image of the squirrel, so I feel it's keeping in the theme.

I had thought to do matching flowers on the background like I did on the last shield, but I'm also considering grouped dots of three which is a theme we see a bit in medieval art too. Jury still out.

Here we see the culmination of three of the projects I have been working on for the Opening Ceremony of the Abbey Medieval Festival 2022: The Shield of Valour, the Mantle or Temperance and the Crown of Chivalry.

All in all, I'm really pleased with how it looks on him, and I'm super pleased with this photo by Adamare Creations who captured me bestowing the crown on our lovely Sir Richard Sheffield.

The entire Opening Ceremony went really well, with laughter where it should have been, seriousness where it should have been, lots of colour and a great Lord Herald narrating. It was a huge amount of work to organise, but on reasonably short notice, I'm pleased at the feedback. The CEO and Director of the Museum were both delighted, so that's what matters.

Further posts and photos of the event to follow... lots happened and much was extremely successful.

Here you can see the start of the background and what I mean by blue roses on the blue background.

The mustard base and the white will be gold and yellow with finer details added, but on the whole, the shield background will be covered with the roses. I had a different picture to share, but I was doing the roses a different way and they looked terrible and I need to paint over them and go again.

I'm really happy with this, and about a quarter of it is outlined.
