I don't usually post up about the war, but I have so many feelings about how tough Ukraine is doing right now. I have lots of re-enactor friends whom I have never met in real life but have followed projects and liked and commented on sewing posts. I feel like I do know them and their families a little, so as I've watched them stop making medieval things and start making war things, it just is so hard.
Some fight during the day and when they can in the evening, sneak into their workshops (except the smith whose blacksmith shed was half destroyed and has just finished making a new roof for it) and others can't do that as they and their families are actively fighting.
The best thing about this war is that unlike previous wars, they can reach out to use for help, and thanks to social media and electronic banking, we can find out what is needed and help get it to them.
One I know of made beautiful medieval tents, but now makes drone bags and items for army use. Sometimes they tell us what supplies they need and the cost and if we can help, we contribute. Others say that sleeping on the ground in Summer is not the worst, but now it's colder, stretchers off the ground would be fantastic. These are hard, tangible things that we in other countries on the other side of the world can actually help with.
The people who used to make the tents are trying so hard to work without power and with daylight (and are cooking over a tiny gas burner) and have been trying to raise funds for a generator so they can work better and longer. I am grateful that I can help make this happen. In a small way, I am helping. I hope it helps.
Ukrainians, stay strong. You are an amazing people.
