Experimental archaeology. Making and testing recipes and instructions from manuscripts. It's so much fun, but fraught with peril.
This little jug has Hildegard von Bingen's mouthwash and breath freshener in it. As I had limited time and provisions at the event, this is one recipe which needed to be prepared at home and brought along for testing. The recipe called for white wine and sage, and for the sage to be boiled in it. As with many recipes for the middle ages, it didn't specify exact quantities or the amount of time the the sage should be boiled, so there were a lot of variables to consider.
Of course, we had to test it!
Blog post coming soon, which will include the recipe and instructions given, how I went about it and what the results were on our test audience of very game persons.
